I have a feeling that 2014 is going to be a good time… On January 2nd, I’d inquired about working with a young horse that hadn’t had a whole lot of success with previous trainers… I might have been biting off more than I can chew, so they say, but something about this feels right.
Started under saddle, he got as far as walk/trot before he bucked off his trainer. Then he had some time off while the owner looked for a new trainer, and then he bucked off that trainer, too.
And now he’s had even more time off.
He’s not a bad horse. Sure he can be a little bit pushy when he knows it’s dinner time, but most of the explosive behaviour he’s growing known for is a result of his nervousness.
But his saving grace is how hard he listens, how hard he tries to learn, and the fact that he will come back and calm down.
Stupid panic-case? No. Just a scaredy-horse. It can be a challenge to constantly be aware and confident, but it’s amazing how much exercising those traits for him is as much a benefit for me too…
